Q&A
Q. What is it about accounting and consulting that first drew your interest?
I was an agricultural management major, and my senior project was on tax-sheltered livestock investments. Seeing how much tax could impact a company’s bottom line got me interested in a career helping businesses with their tax strategies.
Q. What is the toughest decision you have ever made?
I’m very team-oriented and always have an open door. I enjoy teaching, and I like having staff come by my office to ask me technical questions, because it widens their capabilities and helps them gain deeper expertise in specific areas.
Q. Without naming names, tell us about your favorite client and why you enjoyed working with them.
One of my long-time public clients has seen a lot of turnover in their tax department in recent years. Because of this, they’ve relied heavily on my knowledge of their tax complexities, and it has been rewarding to help them and their staff. They also have an interesting range of needs. I’m able to help them with areas like international operations and asset acquisitions, where they don’t have in-house expertise.
Q. Describe your work style.
I’m very team-oriented and always have an open door. I enjoy teaching, and I like having staff come by my office to ask me technical questions, because it widens their capabilities and helps them gain deeper expertise in specific areas.
Q. What’s your proudest moment?
The birth of my two daughters―even though it was also scary. I knew I was going to have a lot of new responsibilities, but raising a family was something I’d always dreamed of.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
Public accounting is a great place to start an accounting career, no matter where you end up. You gain so much knowledge, and it’s a continual process. You really do learn something new every day.
