Q&A

Q. What is it about accounting and consulting that first drew your interest?
Growing up in Manila, in the Philippines, I was always taught that the way to the top is to study hard and work harder. My father wanted me to be a lawyer, but I really enjoyed crunching numbers and reading books. He suggested that I go through the accounting fields as my pre-law area of study. But I enjoyed my time as a CPA so much that I decided not to continue on the path to the law. Instead, I did the next best thing and married a lawyer.
Q. Make a prediction; describe your vision of the future of the general business environment.
Entrepreneurs and business leaders need to be able to lead their teams through more volatile economic cycles. Products and services will need to evolve and will be disrupted more and more frequently than in human business history. But we’ll all be better for it. It’s like being hardened and shaped by fire.
Q. What is the toughest decision you have ever made?
Nothing significant. I am a pretty decisive guy. I usually think through my decision-making process methodically, and that helps me pick a choice that at that point of the process is almost a no-brainer.
Q. Describe your work style.
I am a chameleon and adjust accordingly. I love connecting with my teammates, understanding their pace and how they operate. If they are quick and fast, I run with them. If they need to process and digest things more deliberately, then I walk with them.
Q. What’s your proudest moment?
I am most proud of two things from a professional standpoint: (1) being a national instructor/facilitator at my previous firm, and (2) being featured as a top on-the-job coach, also at my previous firm. To be recognized at a Big Four firm at a national level is truly a remarkable achievement.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life
Without a doubt, my mom and dad are the most influential people in my life. I credit my study skills to the level of preparation my mom instilled in me. I got my work ethic from my dad. I’ve never seen him take a day off; he’s a first to arrive, last to leave kind of person. It’s the things I’ve learned from them that I still use now and that are a major part of my success.
