Q. What is it about accounting and consulting that first drew your interest?
I’ve always been interested in the whole picture—my clients’ business and personal goals. Will they sell their business, for example, or what do they want their legacy to be? In consulting, you have to look ahead, and I enjoy looking at all the components of their lives to develop a long-term strategy. My work starts where the compliance ends.
Q. What law or regulation in the accounting industry would you like to see changed?
GAAP financials for smaller companies are too complex and need to be simplified. I’m also in favor of a flat or consumption tax.
Q. Without naming names, tell us about your favorite client and why you enjoyed working with them.
One of my favorites is a manufacturer that I’ve worked with for 30 years and have helped grow from under $15 million to over $80 million. They see me as a partner in the relationship, and I’m part of their decision-making process.
Q. Describe your work style.
I’m proactive, creative, caring and a strong communicator, with a sense of humor.
Q. What’s your proudest moment?
The birth of my daughter.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
Be authentic, follow your own path and be who you are, and you’ll do well. You have to do what you feel is right.
