Q&A

Q. What law or regulation in the accounting industry would you like to see changed?

A couple years ago, the government updated the Secure Act, where people who inherit retirement accounts must take the money out within 10 years. I think this is short-sighted because it forces money into the hands of people who may be at their peak earning potential and tax rate and doesn’t allow them to effectively grow the nest egg that the previous generation left behind.

Q. Describe your work style.

Free rein with attention to detail. I like to give my team a lot of room to grow and advance, while letting them know that I always have their back. This creates a space where the team feels supported and comfortable to try new things.

Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life?

My father. He worked with many different types of people and treated all of them with equal kindness. If he ever heard that somebody was having a problem, he would find a way to help. Although my parents didn’t have large sums of money, my father always managed to lend a hand beyond his work duties.

Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?

It’s worth it to invest in yourself during the growth portion of your career, because it’ll pay massive dividends. Whether that’s educating yourself, pursuing an advanced degree or spending some time learning more about your client’s business, that commitment will help you grow faster.

Q. What do you love most about your work?

I find satisfaction in mentoring our younger people. I think it’s important to challenge them, learn about what inspires them and take the time to offer individualized coaching to truly help them grow as professionals.
